Simulation is expensive. A single high-resolution climate model can consume millions of CPU hours. A coastal flood scenario in ADCIRC takes days on a research cluster. Multiply that by the thousands of scenarios needed for meaningful risk assessment and the compute required becomes the binding constraint, not the science. Neural surrogates change this. A surrogate trained on the output of a physics solver approximates its solution operator, producing results at inference in milliseconds at a fraction of the energy cost. When physics-informed, the gains compound further. A network that embeds conservation laws directly cannot violate mass balance or energy conservation, which means fewer validation runs and less compute spent correcting implausible outputs. The physics reduces waste as well as error.

Traditional solvers scale poorly with problem complexity. Surrogate inference does not. As these methods spread across climate modeling, fluid dynamics, and biological simulation, the cumulative reduction in compute and energy draw becomes significant. High-quality simulation has been concentrated in institutions that can afford it. A surrogate trained once and deployed cheaply transfers that capability to the places that need it most, the municipal planning office facing the same storm risk as the well-resourced engineering firm, the environmental researcher without a cluster.

The same logic applies to creative fields. Physically accurate dynamics in film and games have required compute that put serious production work out of reach for most people. A surrogate that runs on consumer hardware changes who can make things. The compute savings and the expansion of access tend to produce the same outcome: more people building, with less.
